Printed Bookmarks
Printed bookmards are often overlooked as an effective form of print based marketing when in reality they can be one of the most effective. Unlike other forms of print materials, bookmarks have intrinsic value. People use them to mark their place in a book they are reading. If they read every day and using bookmarks you provided, your information is in front of them each and every day. Given today's lower design and printing costs, this racks up to be one of the highest values in print materials.
Dimensions and Paper- You can get them in any size, but the most cost effective from a printing standpoint include 1.5" x 7", 2" x 8", 3" x 4", 4.25" x 3.66", 8.5" x 2.75", 8.5" x 3.5" and 8.5" x 3.66". Your graphic designer will help determine the size best meeting your objectives based on your target audience, and the message you want to provide. Typically, 14 point and 16 point paper are used for bookmarks. 14 Point is the thinner and 16 point the thicker of the paper stocks available. Your graphic designer will help determine the correct paper stock based on your marketing objectives.
Design/Message - The rule of thumb is to always keep it simple. Too cluttered and people will not take the time to look at it. Always include a benefit to the prospective customer. They are after what benefits them in every case. A bookmark featuring your business but not benefiting the customer with a special, coupon or free recipe has little value other than the intrinsic value of making their page. There are many different finishes your designer can request including matte (dull finish you can write on), UV (gloss finish you cannot write on), metallic, spot color, spot UV and more. If you want your prospective customer to be able to write on the bookmark have one or both sides printed with a matte finish. If you want to accentuate a piece of pizza you are giving away to first time customers, then spot UV may be effective. There are a myriad of different combinations. A good graphics artist can help you choose the most effective.
Uses - discounts, specials or give-away are effective on bookmarks. Providing a recipe or a inspirational message are effective and longer lasting than discounts or specials. With discounts and specials you must call your prospective customer to action. Include an expiration date, or less of a discount after a certain date, etc. Never leave it open ended. Many distribution methods are also available.
- Hire someone to pass them out at high traffic events or places. Make sure it is legal in your area.
- Coordinate a social networking function and pass bookmarks out to all of those that come.
- Attend a interest group meeting (book review meeting) and pass them out there.
- Attend clubs or functions that need a demonstration or presentation of your product or service and leave all those that attend with a bookmark.
- Pass them out at your booth at trade shows or conventions.
